The season concludes with the exhibition “So It Is With Us” Betty Blayton: 40 Years of Selected Works. The show will run from October 1 to November 22, 2008 at Canvas Paper Stone Gallery Gallery. Betty Blayton has established a distinguished career as an exhibiting artist both nationally and internationally. She has an impressive career as both an artist and administrator. Dedicated to art education, Blayton assisted in the founding of the Children Arts Carnival in Harlem, serving as its Executive Director for thirty years. As one of the founding members of the Studio Museum of Harlem, she served on its board from 1965 until 1975.
Canvas Paper Stone Gallery is pleased to collaborate with Essie Green Galleries and Strivers Gardens Gallery on this exhibition of the work of Betty Blayton. According to Toni Wynn’s article “Spirit Light - Betty Blayton From Center Out” (The International Review of African American Art. Vol. 22, No. 1) in her early work, Betty Blayton often wrote poetry to accompany her visual quest. The title for this exhibition was taken from her 1963 poem, “So It Is With Us”:
What shall become of this global orbit/where men only look outward/to physical things/and never inward to his celestial self/where all answers are found?
The Gallery is a member of the Strivers Art Circuit (SAC). The SAC was launched in conjunction with the upcoming 4th annual HOAST (Harlem Open Artists Studio Tour) this October. This Circuit, consisting of art studios and venues in the Strivers Row corridor, was created to develop a hub of arts activity and thereby gain increased visibility and exposure for SAC participants. The SAC, a free, self-guided walking tour taking place during HOAST, allows participants to view some of Harlem's visual and craft artists at work in their galleries and studios.
Canvas Paper and Stone Gallery is also co-producer of ArtCrawl Harlem™, an arts and tourism event which is the first personally guided, bus tour of fine art galleries in Harlem.
